The Rudston Monolith

Information

Journey back in time with me now to the most ancient monument on our tour, the Rudston Monolith, which is to be found in the churchyard of All Saint’s Church, Rudston. This mighty stone stands 25 and a half feet tall, and is Britain’s tallest standing stone. It has stood still and silent for over four thousand years, presiding over the inexorable march of history.

The monolith was probably cut from a quarry at Cayton or Cornelian Bay, and dragged perhaps 10 miles to its current location, a lasting testament to the will of the ancient tribe who erected it.

Archaeologists believe it may have been a ceremonial marker stone, although local legend has it that the devil himself threw the stone at the church and missed.

Location

You can see the huge monlith in the village of Rudston.
